Know Outcomes
“I know the outcomes for which I am accountable.”*
It is common for people to be treated as though they are unable to think for themselves, and thus they require a set of steps so specific that they will know exactly what to do, versus employing their ideas, instincts, and intelligence. When the steps of a role become primary, they become the outcome. This can be a dangerous position for any individual, team, or organization. The result is a lot of energy and activity, but very little productivity.
What will one see when this item is low?
- Steps are strictly enforced, but achieving results becomes secondary
- Compliance (following rules) becomes the individual’s measure for success
- People don’t exhibit a sense of passion for the broader reason of their job
What will one see when this item is high?
- An internal sense of real accomplishment
- Freedom to try new means and tools to reach higher performance levels
- Real “outcome” measures are established and discussed
What can the leader do to increase engagement around this item?
- Define the real outcomes for every team member and role
- Measure outcomes and related results and performance
- Provide guidance around possible ways to produce the right outcomes
